Amazing post as always. As you point out Russia was on the up swing just before the war. It's one of the reasons Germany wanted one! To stop this progress. Nicholas was a good man. The tragedy was his and Alexandra's inflexibility in regards to goverment . They felt things must remain as they always were. He , in order to honor his father, she, so thier son would inherit what Nicholas received. It was pointless . Thier son would never rule because of his ill heath. Regardless of war or revolution, the throne was lost to this branch of the family and no one else was made ready.

But it has to be admitted that elements in both White and Red did not want peaceful reform to take place. For instance, neither side would want Alexander II 's just signed constitution to become law. He could have been killed by either side, or both.

Stolypin was another case of marked man by both sides exactly because of his reforms. These elements of both Red and White got thier wish . Peaceful reform did not happen.
